Junk Pirate Exhibition
December 2006

Three Lukes, 2006, Mixed Media, 8 x 10 inches
The Junk Pirate Art Exhibition captures commonplace images and objects and presents them within a gallery structure. Removed from their original context, the objects can be viewed from angles of aesthetics, nostalgia, irony, unintended humor, or even as reflections of the popular culture that created them. Yet Junk Pirate is more than simply isolating an image from its initial context. The objects in the show are often presented within a framework of a collection, inviting the viewer to appreciate the subtle difference within groups of similar items.
The range of items on display and the clean presentation (all in 2nd-hand frames) makes for an anthropological exhibit that can range from the personal (other’Äôs people postcard writings) to the cultural (dozens of different video game controllers) to the visually grandiose (over 170 unique Joker cards).
Pete Glover started to compile objects, images and ephemera at his job at a junk store and published them in his almost bi-monthly zine Junk Pirate. Greeting cards, instructional diagrams, personal ephemera, game cards, comic advertisements, other people’Äôs photos, yearbook scraps, vintage packaging, and countless other illustrations mingle together to form an ongoing document of ’Äúfound art’Äù. Junk Pirate is now on its 17th issue.
