Brian Caraway
This is Not Mount Tamalpais
July 6th - August 26th 2007

This is Not Mount Tamalpais, 2007, digital collage, 4 x 6 inches

In much of Caraway’Äôs work, the unpretentious, rough-hewn beauty of the hilly Northern California landscape finds its formal corollary between the rugged topography and the various print shop tools and surfaces. Overspray from a misted texture, the rolling folds of a piece of print shop tarlatan, and the consequential engravings of a cutting board become compositional elements of the final artwork. Throughout all these processes, the impressive silhouette of Mount Tamalpais remains a constant. Like Hokusai’Äôs reverence for Mt. Fuji, ’ÄúThis Is Not Mount Tamalpais’Äù is an homage to the landscape and the creative techniques that express it.

This exhibition is the culmination of five years of work that features three site-specific installations, paintings, drawings, prints, and a tapestry from The Magnolia Tapestry Project. The show temporarily merges both the gallery and Caraway's studio which is located behind the gallery.

A resident of Oakland, Caraway has an MFA from Mills College and a BFA from SFSU. He has been Senior Printmaker at Magnolia Editions in West Oakland since 2002.
