Rowan Morrison Gallery is pleased to announce a solo show of new works by Mitsy Ávila Ovalles. A San Jose native, and self proclaimed “ESL”, Ovalles utilizes her abilities and as an accomplished draftswoman to create amazingly painted artifacts of Mexican, Chicano and American pop culture. She draws inspiration from a deep pool of imagery including Latino “b-list” celebrities from soap operas, sports, and pop music, as well as animal and consumer iconography. Her paintings are deeply layered and richly textured and often presented as part of larger murals and installations that include an array of narrative and personal artifacts, yet speak of a common cultural, generational and gender experience.

Mitsy Ávila Ovalles was born in Santa Clara, CA in 1978. She grew up, lives and works in San José where she received her BFA in painting from the local university in 2004. Mitsy’s work has been exhibited widely for the last seven years in reputable spaces such as Galeria de la Raza in San Francisco, Outer Edge Studio in Monterey and internationally at Lart23tres Galeria in Mexico City. Mitsy uses collage, sculpture, wood burning, signage and installation to recreate her personal history and share her cultural memory.
